Singulair is a drug prescribed against allergies in adults and children as young as 12 months old who have asthma. The drug is also given for those who have a running nose and sneezing and also to prevent exercise-induced bronchoconstriction.

A leukotriene inhibitor, Singulair works by preventing the release of certain chemicals called Leukotrienes, which are released when the body comes in contact with allergens or pollens. Leukotriene chemicalk is considered to cause swelling of the lungs and tightening of the muscles in the air tract that leads to asthma.

The Singulair drug has to be taken once daily in the evening for asthma and allergy symptoms. A single dose at least two hours before exercise is prescribed for exercise induced bronchoconstriction.

The drug has shown considerable success rates with allergy problems. Even though the drug comes with about 80 per cent of success rates, it also comes with many side effects like other medicines. Well, it is always better to discuss with your doctor about all your medical conditions before he prescribes the drug.

Singulair is rated FDA pregnancy category B, which means that it is not known if the drug cause harm to the unborn baby. However, it is better to consult your doctor and discuss with him about all the risks and benefits of the drug when taken during pregnancy. The drug is also known to pass into breast milk and so it is not good to feed your babes when you are on Singulair medication.
